Should we still be talking about digital transformation?

By Kevin South, Head of Digital & CX

The use of digital technology to make changes to various elements of a business is referred to as digital transformation. Some business leaders have become weary of the term as it is a buzzword for any type of innovation in today's ever-evolving corporate environment.

This, however, may be due to businesses approaching digital transformation in the wrong way, leading to expensive mistakes and digital fatigue. Digital technologies can help businesses to streamline operations, access new markets, and adapt to changing customer needs and competitor offerings.

To unlock the power of true digital transformation, it is essential for business leaders to prioritise technology and implement these solutions in order to enhance value to customers. It is vital that we continue to discuss digital transformation, but with a much clearer understanding of what it means and how proper implementation can benefit businesses.

Upgrading to digital processes requires some experimentation

While integrating technology offers benefits such as increased productivity and cost savings, there are some cautionary tales. Some companies have spent millions on new technology, but this has failed to meet expectations through improper implementation. Instead of viewing these setbacks as reasons to avoid embracing digital, business leaders should view them as learning opportunities.

Embracing digital necessitates some trial and error, as well as gaining a better understanding of how to select those solutions that would be most beneficial for your specific business. A gradual approach is best; slowly upgrading business operations as outdated practices fade away is often more successful.

The advantages of digital transformation

The reduction in costs and increase in efficiency are perhaps the most significant advantages of the digital revolution. The recent shift away from physical workspaces is a great example of this, demonstrating both the need for, and the benefits of, cloud services.

Through digital transformation, more employees are able to communicate quickly, conveniently and remotely - with relatively little cost or effort on the part of their employers. Businesses have been able to gain all of the benefits of digital while remaining focused on their core operations by partnering with ICT companies to manage their online operations.

Access to various digital tools has also made work faster, easier and more efficient, resulting in significant productivity gains. According to a 2020 study, digital transformation is associated with greater productivity, economic growth and employment in rapidly developing countries, such as Kenya.

Digital transformation strategies aren't one-size-fits-all; what works for one company won't necessarily work for another. Before business processes can be automated or digitised, time and resources must be invested in re-examining them and figuring out how they can be improved through technological innovations.

It is vital to understand both your business and the potential for change that certain technology investments offer. Partnering with the right ICT solutions provider will assist in making that process much easier.
