The difference between ICT and IT

To experts in the industry or businesses that use these services often, the difference between information technology (IT) and information and communications technology (ICT) may seem clear. But to those new to the sectors or looking to implement these services into their companies, the distinction may seem a bit muddy.

ICT and IT are two separate fields that can overlap and SEACOM Business offers services in both. In summary, IT involves computers, software, servers, networks and other related hardware. It allows companies to relay data and manage digital information. We provide various IT services, including cloud computing and cyber security products.

On the other hand, ICT has more to do with communications and can be seen as an extension of IT. This includes the field of telecommunications, whether through transmitting signals or receiving information. Our ICT services include fibre internet connectivity, carrier ethernet and virtual server hosting, to name a few.

How IT relates to modern businesses

Any successful company could not exist without some form of IT infrastructure. Computers and networks have become the digital backbone of commerce, supported by databases, servers and cyber security systems. IT enables a company to store information, transfer data and complete everyday tasks that keep the business running.

Most enterprises will have a dedicated IT team or department that oversees the entire IT system. This team will include a system administrator, IT manager, network engineers, computer programmers, cyber security specialists and web developers. The core function of IT is to make business processes easier, more reliable, more secure and to create an effective online connection between staff and customers.

How ICT relates to companies

Large enterprises need ICT solutions of their own - especially those that use call centres or need massive bandwidth for business processes and data transfers. Secure, reliable and superfast internet is essential nowadays, so fibre connectivity is the best solution at the moment. Similarly, voice communications and email servers also play an important role in modern communications.

ICT does not only include modern communications technologies - even older devices, such as telephones, fax machines, radios and televisions slot into this field. There are some devices that fit into both IT and ICT, too - playing a role in both fields. These include certain computer programmes, the internet, smartphones and operating systems.

Why aren’t they seen as the same?

If IT and ICT can overlap, then why are they still viewed as separate sectors? There are still many technologies that are only used in IT and not for communication. So at an enterprise, academic or government level, it’s important to distinguish between the two. IT employees generally do not deal with communications infrastructure or technology. These jobs are often outsourced to third-party professionals, like SEACOM Business. Similarly, ICT professionals may not have the in-depth knowledge or experience to work on complicated IT systems that are used by some high-tech businesses.

Modern enterprises need both IT and ICT solutions in order to function optimally and ensure that their data and customer information is stored securely, but remains readily accessible by those employees that need it.
