SEACOM celebrates its 12th birthday

On Friday, 23 July 2021, SEACOM marked its 12th birthday. The company has built one of Africa's largest networks of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure throughout the years and is best known for its subsea cables that connect Africa to the rest of the world. SEACOM also provides African businesses with superior fiber optic connectivity and a variety of other digital solutions.

In our 12-year history, we've achieved several successes. In July 2009, SEACOM built the first submarine cable system connecting Africa to Asia and Europe along the continent's eastern and western coasts. Since then, we've launched a vast number of IT, communications and cloud services in countries such as Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania and others.

SEACOM’s significant milestones over 12 years

  • 2009 - After connecting its first subsea cable to Asia and Europe, SEACOM goes live in South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, and Djibouti.
  • 2010 - Internet Protocol (IP) services are launched, providing internet connectivity for customers.
  • 2011 - SEACOM establishes point of presence (PoP) in Teraco Isando; Africa’s largest data centre.
  • 2012 - SEACOM’s West Africa Cable System (WACS) goes live, providing a redundant cable ring around Africa.
  • 2013 - SEACOM increases the capacity of its subsea network to improve internet connectivity across the continent. SEACOM also provides four Nairobi-based innovation hubs with 100Mbps internet access.
  • 2014 - SEACOM establishes PoP in Uganda.
  • 2015 - SEACOM Business is established in South Africa to provide a wide variety of IT services to companies across the country.
  • 2016 - To improve customer experience, SEACOM adds peering points throughout Europe and Africa. PoP is established in Rwanda and SEACOM Business is launched in Kenya.
  • 2017 - SEACOM establishes a point of presence in Botswana and acquires MacroLan to expand its fibre network in the Western Cape in South Africa.
  • 2018 - SEACOM upgrades the Subsea Cable System to 1.5Tbps and acquires FibreCo, completing the ‘African Ring’ with 3500km of trans-South African fibre.
  • 2019 - SEACOM provides the first 100G international service to a customer between South Africa and Europe. SEACOM Business is launched in Uganda.
  • 2020 - WonderNet, an internet service provider (ISP) that provides fibre to the home, is launched by SEACOM South Africa.
